THE THINGS MEN APPLAUD

There was this massive house
I went into one day
Was so magnificent
A great sight to behold
The finishing was great
The walls had costly stones
The gate was made of gold
The roof exceptional
The owner was revered
By almost everyone
His house was one in town
No one had such around
I heard them say of him
“This man is very blessed
He has achieved a lot”
But Heaven didn’t think so
There was this other man
He had lots of awards
From doctorate degrees
And philanthropic acts
He seemed comfortable
More than many his peers
He must be so fulfilled
But Heaven didn’t think so
I slept and dreamt of them
Both stood before the Judge
Their lives’ accounts to give
And rewards to receive
The house went on the scale
The heavy bank account
The many awards too
All weighed nothing at all
You spent your life in vain
The Judge said unto them
The things you laboured for
All had no meaning here
The things we labour for
Let’s sit back and assess
What would they profit us
After our race is done
Let’s labour for the Lord
Give our best unto Him
Support the gospel work
Help the needy and sick
When we get home on high
And our work’s tried with fire
For their eternal worth
We’ll receive great rewards. Amen
