THE BUILDING WITHOUT A ROOF

It was another evening for the community assignment. The Sun was still up, and this community was not a busy one. Viola made her way to the next building for her assignment. Just before she reached the address was a grave on her right side. It was well-plastered but had no paint, flowers, or an epitaph. Behind the grave was a building built up to a lintel level with no roof. The scene told a solemn story of an unachieved goal and how brief life is.

Every human has a goal, no matter how flimsy or important the goal is. We do not know when our life will end, nor when the giver of life will take it away from us. We have aspirations, whether it is an educational attainment, business, or caree6r goals. It may also be plans for our marital and family life, or for our kids and their future. It could also be spiritual or ministerial plans. Your aspirations may be material- a car to purchase, a property to acquire, electronics to meet your needs, and the rest of life’s hustles. Whatever our plans are, we must remember the creator and make Him the center of our lives. Whatever we are chasing, only God can ensure our success in them, and even the sustainability of such goals.

The story in Luke 12:16-21 of a farmer whose farm yielded much fruit, who said in his heart that he would build extra storage, keep the yields in them, and say unto his soul that it was time to rest for several years. He died the same day he made such a proposition because he did not factor God, the owner of his breath, into those plans. God owns our breath, and we cannot do anything outside him. James 4:13-17 admonished that we should not propose aspirations and plan things without factoring God into the equation. We should and must say that if God wills, we will do such and such and not brag about our plans and aspirations. God owns all things, and it is through Him that we can do all things.

Life is uncertain, and we must hold the things of this world with loose hands but firmly hold on to eternity and our eternal rewards. Whatever God has given us richly to enjoy must be used with all humility, knowing God gives all things and can halt them at any time. We must be willing to share our material things with those in need within our family, the church, and the neighborhood, so we can be remembered by what we did when we are long gone. People may not remember your name, but they will not forget how you made them feel. This also has implications for easy acceptance or rejection of the gospel, so don’t forget to be charitable. Dorcas was brought back to life by Peter, who was touched by the wailings of her benefactors (Acts 9:36).

Don’t get me wrong, whatever beautiful dreams you have can be achieved in our lifetime with God on our side. Pen them down, pray actively on them, and plan practically towards achieving them. You can also be led to discuss with those who can act as a catalyst to your dreams, but please don’t fall prey to haters who act as friends, like the case of Joseph in Gen 37:5. If you can dream it, you can achieve it. You have a big God, the ruler of heaven and the earth, the God of all possibilities, so deem your aspirations as done as long as it is according to His will. You have a goal, keep at it, you will be celebrated and not truncated along life’s path. Amen.
